Orthodontic Patient Transfers in Norfolk & Chesapeake

At Eastern Virginia Orthodontics, our mission is to help patients throughout Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake, VA achieve beautiful, healthy smiles through orthodontic treatment. We offer a variety of treatment options including braces and Invisalign, and we work hard to customize treatment to fit each patient's unique lifestyle. The majority of our patients work with us from their very first appointment, but in some cases, we take patients transferring from another orthodontist. While this process can be difficult, we'll be here to help you through it. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you'll be transferring to our office in the middle of orthodontic treatment.

About Orthodontic Transfers

Ideally, it's always best to complete orthodontic treatment with the same doctor you started with – but sometimes, life gets in the way of what's ideal. Circumstances change, and it may be necessary for some patients to relocate in the middle of orthodontic treatment. If that's the case for you, the expert orthodontists at Eastern Virginia Orthodontics are here to help make the process run as smoothly as possible and ensure you get the best possible orthodontic care. But the transfer process can be a challenge, so it's important to know what to expect ahead of time.

What to Expect When Changing Orthodontists

There's no way to sugar coat this: the transfer process isn't always convenient. Many transfer patients will face an increase in treatment time, an increased treatment fee, and potentially even a change in treatment plan from the initial recommendation. This happens for a number of reasons, but in particular, your new orthodontist will need to complete a due diligence process to assume responsibility for your treatment. This adds work and makes what might be a simple treatment into a more involved process. Here are a few factors that can drive up the timeline and cost of orthodontic treatment during a transfer:

  • It'll take time for you to identify a new orthodontist and schedule an appointment, which can set your treatment back.
  • Your new orthodontist will need to spend time reviewing your case, which includes requesting transfer records from your original orthodontist.
  • After studying these files, your new orthodontist will need to decide what approach to take with your treatment from that point on. They may continue your treatment or may decide that a change in course is the best call.
  • If your new orthodontist decides to change things, they may need to replace brackets or other orthodontic appliances.
  • Cost of living varies from place to place, and this can affect orthodontic fees. For example, orthodontic treatment in a metropolitan area will be more expensive than in a rural area, and if you're relocating, your treatment fee may increase as an effect of the increased cost of living in your new home.

  • These issues can be difficult, and the more complicated or involved your treatment is, the more prevalent these issues will be. At our practice, we strive to make the transfer process as easy, quick, and convenient as possible, but there are certain things that are outside our control. We'll always try to keep treatment costs and timeline as close to your original arrangement as possible, but it may not be possible – and if you do face an increase in fees or treatment time, we apologize in advance for the inconvenience.
