Digital Orthodontic Impressions for More Convenient Treatment

One critical part of the orthodontic treatment process is orthodontic impressions: a physical model of your teeth and bite that helps our Norfolk orthodontist diagnose your orthodontic condition and plan effective and convenient treatment. Unfortunately, traditional impressions require patients to sit with a mouthful of sticky, messy dental putty for more than 10 minutes to form the mold – something that's often less than pleasant. 

Now, however, there's another option: the iTero Intra-Oral Scanner. The iTero scanner is a digital imaging system that allows us to create a fully-realized, 3D computer model of your mouth and bite, eliminating the need for messy putty and allowing us to plan your treatment like never before. 

How Do Digital Impressions Work?

The process of using the iTero scanner is remarkably simple and convenient. Your Chesapeake or Norfolk orthodontist will simply wave the wand over your teeth and chewing surfaces, and as they're doing so, the scanner will take hundreds of pictures of your teeth and mouth. Advanced computer software then combines these images together to create a three-dimensional model of your entire mouth, allowing us to see your bite and orthodontic situation like never before. 

The iTero system means we no longer have to use uncomfortable putty, but the benefits go beyond sheer convenience. The cutting-edge technology in the system means iTero digital impressions are much more accurate than traditional physical impressions, and we can even use the software the plan and map out treatment ahead of time, manipulating the model in real time to visualize the effects of your treatment. This is especially helpful when planning Invisalign treatments, as we can plan the tooth movement for each set of aligners in minute detail.
