National Orthodontic Health Month

Drs. Shivar, Peluso and Anderson and the entire team at Eastern Virginia Orthodontics are dedicated to providing patients with the personalized care they need to achieve the smile of their dreams. Whether you’re looking for an experienced orthodontist for your child, or want to improve your smile with Invisalign, you can trust our offices to deliver results. This October we’re not only celebrating Halloween, but also National Orthodontic Health Month. It’s the perfect time for us to stress the importance of maintaining your hard-earned treatment results, and being careful during this candy-filled time.

The Importance of Orthodontic Care

At it’s core, orthodontic treatment works to straighten your teeth and properly align your bite and jaw. Undoubtedly, improving your smile will have noticeable effects on your appearance, but what else can orthodontics do for you? Straight teeth are much easier to clean and maintain, increasing the likelihood that you’ll have healthy teeth and gums as long as you practice great oral hygiene. For those with facial and jaw pain, orthodontics can be used to eliminate the pain that can have detrimental effects on your everyday life.

The psychological and emotional effects of orthodontic treatment are also overwhelmingly positive. With beautiful and healthy teeth, most people will feel more confident, more comfortable, and they’ll be more likely to be themselves around others. Studies have shown that people who smile more generally have higher levels of happiness, which can improve the quality of personal and professional relationships

Often times, orthodontic treatment is associated with children and teens, but adults deserve to have a beautiful smile too! We offer metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign and more to our patients, so they can customize their treatment to fit their needs, lifestyle and preferences.

Enjoy Halloween - But Be Careful With Candies!

National Orthodontic Health Month is also the same month as Halloween! If you have braces during this spooky holiday, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to avoid all candy. The most important thing is to stick to your treatment plan, and following the list of foods to avoid we’ve provided you with. Candy that’s hard or sticky can break your brackets or wires, so skip the Starburst, caramels, Snickers, and Paydays. Candies such as Hershey’s, Three Musketeers, Reese’s, and Kit Kats are safe to eat during treatment. Just be sure to brush and floss afterwards!
