5 Tips for Jaw Surgery Recovery

At Eastern Virginia Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on providing a wide variety of orthodontic treatments. From basic metal braces or Invisalign to Temporary Anchorage Devices, we’re proud to be your go-to orthodontist in the Hampton Roads area.

Orthognathic surgery, also known simply as corrective jaw surgery, is used to correct more severe skeletal and dental issues and it takes a bit more time to recover from than many basic orthodontic treatments. To ensure a full and healthy recovery after jaw surgery, follow these helpful tips from your friends at Eastern Virginia Orthodontics.

Get Lots of Rest

Sleep is imperative to your body’s healing process, so be sure to take it easy and get as much rest as possible following your corrective jaw surgery. Don’t attempt to jump back into regular activity too quickly, and pay close attention to what your body is telling you – it’ll let you know if you’re overdoing it!

Keep the Swelling Down

Swelling is common following jaw surgery, so make sure you’re prepared to manage it. Use extra pillows or cushions to keep your head elevated for the first couple of days afterward and ice it several times throughout the day.

Pre-Prepare Appropriate Meals

Before your surgery, it’s a good idea to hit the grocery store to make sure you have the necessary items to sustain a liquid diet for however long your orthodontist in Hampton Roads deems appropriate. Once you are ready to switch back to more solid foods, transition to soft foods like applesauce and mashed potatoes.

Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is also incredibly important during the healing process, so be sure to keep up on your water intake, even if you aren’t as active during this period.

Manage Your Pain

Some pain and discomfort are to be expected while healing from any surgery, and corrective jaw surgery is no different. Use gentle heat and over-the-counter medications as directed to help manage your pain levels and stay as comfortable as possible.
