With the holidays here, we know a lot of people will be traveling, both our own patients and patients from other orthodontic offices. While a true orthodontic emergency is few and far between, we wanted to help you prepare for traveling with braces.

Bring an Orthodontic Emergency Kit
Believe it or not, most of these items aren’t something you need to get from us, but they are normal household items that can help with any problems until you can see your orthodontist.
Orthodontic Emergency Travel Kit
- Orthodontic Wax: Don’t let your braces rubbing against your cheek bother you during Christmas morning, make sure to have a stash of wax to cover the offending bracket and put your focus back on family and presents.
-
A Pencil with an Eraser: If a protruding wire and is poking your cheek or irritating you, the eraser at the end of a pencil can be used to push it into a more comfortable position. While this is only a temporary solution until you can see your orthodontist, it is a great quick fix to make sure your trip is joyful!
-
Nail Clippers: In some cases wires have gotten long enough that even repositioning it will not solve the problem, so have a pair of disinfected nail clippers on hand to cut off the end of that wire.
-
Tweezers: We know our patients would never bite into a candy cane or any foods that could damage their braces, but if a bracket does pop off, you can use a pair of disinfected tweezers to remove any loose problematic parts.
- Your Orthodontist’s Phone Number: Although most contact numbers are only a Google away, if for any reason you don’t have Wifi or a good signal, always have your orthodontist’s number written down or saved in your cell phone. (Hint hint, add these while you’re thinking about it):
Virginia Beach 757-340-2881
Chesapeake 757-547-7002
Norfolk 757-583-2333
